Choosing Your Personal Trainer: A Guide to Finding Your Perfect Fit

Choosing the Right Personal Trainer for Your Needs

When the term 'Personal Training' comes up, many envision intense workouts and sweat-drenched bootcamps.

But what if you've had an injury?

What if you're hesitant to return to the gym, post-physio clearance?

This is where the challenge lies with some personal trainers.

As an industry whole, many personal trainers do not have the knowledge in common gym-related injuries unless they've pursued additional education.

Speaking from my own experience as a personal trainer, I once lacked this crucial knowledge. How could I guide clients confidently through recovery when I didn't comprehend their injuries? This is when I knew it was important for me to undertake further study and get additional support, so that I was confident I could successfully help my clients, now and in the future, achieve their goals, despite having injury challenge.

So, how can you make the right choice? Here are three crucial factors to guide you:

1. Conduct Research & Do Trials:

It is really important to research and particpant in trials. Your situation is unique, so it is important to choose the personal trainer that will best fit your unique circumstances.

There are a large number of personal trainers out there, who specialise in different areas and have undertaken additional study/research. Ask the questions. Do trials. Do you connect with the trainer? Do you align with their training methods? These are all important quesrtions to consider when doing your research and choosing the best personal trainer for you.

2. Define Your Goals:

You would have heard it before- what are your goals? But this question is really important to consider BEFORE you hire a personal trainer. Why? This will be one of the FIRST questions they will ask you. This is not only for the trainer to get to know you, but it is for you to see if the trainer is confident in helping you achieve those goals.

So what are your goals for the next 6-12 months? Be prepared to share these with your trainer to see if they align with your expectations.

3. Evaluate Support:

This is extremely important. The trainer's support, along with a positive environment, makes your fitness journey more enjoyable, helps you to stay accountable and to create those healthy, life-long habits.

Training should be a blend of exercise, nutrition, mindset, friendship and fostering our continuous growth.

Remember, don't settle for just anyone. Your personal trainer should be a perfect fit, understanding your needs and goals. If you don't connect with your initial trainer, it's okay. Seek out someone who truly resonates with you. Personal training is individualised; prioritise compatibility and expertise that aligns with what your needs and goals are.
